The comet was discovered by Eric Christensen on 21 December 2004 during the
course of the Catalina Sky Survey. Prediscovery images from LINEAR allowed the
computation of a preliminary orbit, and further images from the 1997 return, taken in
1998 by NEAT and LONEOS allowed the comet to be numbered.
