Amateur astronomer John Broughton, of Reedy Creek, Queensland, Australia,
discovered an 18th magnitude comet in images taken with his 51cm f2.7 reflector on
9 October 2005. Prediscovery observations back to 26 August were found.
2005 T5 was recovered in images taken with the 1.5-m reflector of the Mt Lemmon
Survey on 24September 2025 at 20th magnitude. PanSTARRS were then able to find
archival images of the comet taken on 1 July 2024.
